Niagara Falls in Ontario is a fantastic place to spend a vacation. Although the waterfalls themselves are the main reason why many visit, there are actually some other great attractions that you can enjoy should you choose to spend more than a couple of days here. From trying your luck at the Niagara Fallsview Casino to taking one of the legendary Maid in the Mist tours, keep reading for a list of 7 exciting attractions to enjoy the next time you visit Niagara Falls.
1. Maid of the Mist
Widely thought to be the best way to see the Falls, the Maid of the Mist tour is something every traveler to Niagara should experience. Docking on both the American and Canadian sides of the Falls, visitors will be provided with a poncho and then guided to a seat on a coal powered steamboat. That said, you can expect to get soaked as the tour will take you directly under the Falls. It is an experience, though, and one you will remember forever.
2. Niagara Fallsview Casino
When the sun goes down over the Falls, it’s time to put your swanky evening clothes on and head over to the Niagara Fallsview Casino. Sitting on the Ontarian side of the Falls, the Fallsview Casino is home to several thousand slot machines, and 150 table games. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to try your luck, or you can just enjoy watching others. Entry to the casino is free, though you will need money if you want to have a game or two.
3. Journey Behind the Falls
If you thought viewing the Falls from the front was impressive, try viewing them from the back. On this tour, you’ll be able to stand literally right behind the Falls and get a literally amazing view of the roaring sheets of water hurtling down. Tours start with a ride up to the observation deck, where you’ll be able to see the Niagara River and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, and ends with a cavern tour where you will experience the Falls from a different perspective. It’s definitely worth the $13 admission fee!
4. MarineLand
If your kids are starting to tire of the Falls, and you want to spend a day keeping them entertained, MarineLand could be the answer. Located about a mile south of the Falls, MarineLand is home to the biggest habitat of killer whales in the world. Kids will also enjoy feeding the fawns and does, and there’s also some rollercoasters in the park to keep older children entertained. Admission ranges from $34 for children under 10 to $40 for adults, but you could easily spend a full day here to make the most of your money.
5. Inniskillin Winery
Although Niagara is primarily known for its Falls, its wine comes a close second. So, what better trip to take than to the Inniskillin Winery? Located in Niagara on the Lake, the Inniskillin Winery is primarily known for its Icewine. Made from grapes that freeze on the vine during the winter months, Icewine has an intense flavor that is unlikely to be like anything you have tried before. Guided tours are available that teach you about the winemaking process, and those over the legal drinking age will have the opportunity to sample the wine for themselves.
6. Old Fort, Niagara
Located on the American side of the Falls, Old Fort, Niagara is ideal for history buffs, as well as those who want to learn more about the American Revolution. The fort has changed hands over the years, being home to French, British and American troops, and visitors can explore the fort’s barracks, ancient cannons, and underground gunpowder rooms. It’s also located in one of the most scenic parts of New York state, and overlooks both the Niagara River and Lake Ontario.
7. Fallsview Indoor Waterpark
Niagara’s largest waterpark, Fallsview is a great place to spend a day with the whole family. It’s located within walking distance of the Falls themselves, and is centrally located between three of the most popular hotels in the region. The waterpark contains a full sized wave pool, a tiny tots splash area, an adults’ only Jacuzzi, a year round outdoor pool and sundeck, a jungle beach play area, and 16 waterslides. Admission costs $44.95 and is definitely worth the money.
