These days, breast enhancement is incredibly personalized. While some women may want dramatic changes and an ‘augmented’ look, others would like something more subtle. With all the available options, many women are left wondering what’s right for them. What’s best for one woman isn’t always the ideal solution for another.

Today, we’ve asked the specialists at Dermatology & Plastic Surgery of Arizona to give us a couple of pointers to help you along with the decision-making process. They suggest asking yourself a few of the following questions.

#1: What are my contouring goals?

Fat transfer typically cannot increase the breast more than one cup size, so if you’re ready for significant changes implants are probably your best bet. If you’re looking for softer contours with a natural look, fat transfer procedures might be a good treatment option. It should be noted neither option will be able to lift sagging breasts or reposition the nipple.

It can take up to 6-months for surgical fat grafting to fully take effect. Over time, fat is naturally reabsorbed and metabolized by the body making maintenance treatments necessary. Implants are typically a longer-lasting procedure with a substantial size increase right away.

#2: How much time do I have for recovery?

A breast augmentation with implants is a stand-alone procedure. Patients can see long-term results with a single surgery. Fat transfer, however, also requires liposuction which can extend the recovery process.

Full recovery from breast implant surgery is generally about 4-6 weeks while fat grafting downtime is about 6-8 weeks. Secondary fat grafting procedures may also be necessary to achieve an optimal outcome.

#3: Do I have enough harvestable fat?

For fat transfer procedures, the patient should have a significant amount of unwanted fat elsewhere on the body (typically the thighs, belly, or buttocks). If you’re looking for a 2-in-1 contouring procedure, fat transfer can produce exceptional results. However, if increasing your bust size is your primary concern, you’d probably be better suited for breast implants.
