We all love that feeling of stepping out of the hair salon with a gorgeous new haircut and perfectly straight hair. But when you try and replicate the sleekness at home, it just never seems to come out right. Thankfully you can now skip the trip to the salon with these few tips and tricks for beautifully straight hair!
Preparing Your Hair
No-one is going to get the magic of hair salon straightness without preparing their locks first. You need to ensure that your hair is healthy and well moisturized; a good way to do this is to use a hair mask on a regular basis. Depending on how dry your hair is you may need to use one more often, but I suggest once every week to two weeks. You can buy hair masks in a variety of different stores or you can make your own using coconut oil.
What you want to do is to brush through your hair so there are zero knots, warm up a small amount of coconut oil in the palm of your hands, and apply from the roots to the tips of your hair. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and wash off with an anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner.
Drying
Now that you’re out of the shower, grab a nice thick towel and remove all excess water from your hair, it should not be dripping wet. However, do not rub your hair, this can cause your hair to turn frizzy. What you want to do is to pat your hair dry and squeeze the water out, then continue to wrap it on top of your head.
Make sure you part your hair into sections, running your brush in a smooth motion at about a 45-degree angle; closely followed by the blow dryer. On every section make sure to spray heat protectant to avoid damaging it.
The Main Event: Straightening
First of all, you want to make sure that you have the right flat iron for your hair type. You can find out which is best for you in the top flat irons round-up from Startifacts! Your hair should now be completely dry, failure to dry it could result in frizzy and damaged hair and no one wants that! Again part your hair into even sections; instead of using a brush you now want to use a comb. Run your flat iron from root to tip of every section. Make sure to do this at a steady speed – if you do it too fast you will not get the straightness you desire, but if you linger too long on one piece of hair this may cause damage and dryness. Make sure you keep using your heat protectant! This may take a little a little more time than usual and seem tedious, but trust me the results will be worth it.
Remember that with practice and patience your hair will be beautiful, you’re not going to get it perfect right away! With good preparation and the correct tools, you can create perfect salon quality straight hair from the comfort of your own home.
