With the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, growing hemp (which had been effectively illegal since 1937) was suddenly allowed. This change occurred because of shifting public perception about cannabis use, but also because it was finally recognized that industrial hemp strains, which contain almost no THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana, have a myriad of uses from renewable energy to medical treatments. Change in legislation has led to a boom in the market for CBD products, but CBD is not the only cannabinoid undergoing amazing new research. Enter CBG, the next compound showing promising research in many areas of medicine. Read on to discover what CBG may do for you.
CBG for Your Skin
Anecdotally, CBG has many of the same benefits as CBD. One area where it appears to shine above and beyond is when it comes to assisting skin conditions like dermatitis, psoriasis and other uncomfortable or itchy skin problems. Research has shown that CBG in salve form, like that from Hunger Mountain Hemp, can help with the maintenance and repair of the skin’s barrier. Part of this is because CBG and other cannabinoids may prove to fight inflammation, actually turning off the gene expression that causes inflammation in the first place. Secondly, CBG has broad antibacterial properties, even against methicillin-resistant bacteria, and it’s antifungal.
CBG for Your Hair
Some also claim that CBG helps prevent hair loss and keeps your mane shiny & healthy. These claims may in part be due to the way CBG interacts with the skin, but it’s also likely that it has to do with how CBG interacts with our sebaceous oil glands, working to keep skin moisture at a balanced level. CBG to Potentiate CBD
Each of the hundreds of cannabinoids in hemp plants will interact in some way with human endocannabinoid receptors, but as research progresses it becomes clearer that these compounds are more effective in combination. In Canada, the first prescription drug for pain containing CBD, “Nabiximols” is a combination of both CBD and THC. If you’re already using some form of CBD and not getting the level of relief you’re looking for, you can look for a combination cream that includes THC in many states. However, if you’re concerned about the possible psychoactive consequences of THC, consider instead adding CBG to your arsenal.
CBG will potentiate the CBD, meaning the sum is greater than the parts. The effect you look for from each compound is heightened by using them together. These studies are still preliminary, but evidence suggests that using the two together can actually increase the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects beyond what you would experience with each one individually.
Like CBD, it appears CBG can help you relax and feel less anxious but it’s not exactly the same. CBG appears to be more akin to THC in stimulating appetite which makes it a great choice for supplementing pain treatment for cancer patients. CBG, like THC, may also lower pressure in the eyes, helping to treat and prevent glaucoma.
CBG isn’t in the spotlight yet, but its potential benefits should keep it on your radar and if you are looking for a natural way to treat a range of issues, CBG is worth checking out.
