The popularity of television series, in particular period dramas like Downton Abbey, has led to an increase in popularity of many older styles. This has carried over to jewelry, with many consumers heading out and looking to buy antique pieces. Consumers that cannot afford real antique jewelry are opting for the second best thing, modern remakes of classic pieces.

For many the allure of antique pieces goes far beyond the aesthetic they can add to a jewelry collection. It goes without saying the handcrafting of the pieces is far superior compared to modern machine crafted jewelry. These antique rings were also crafted prior to the start of modern conflicts, making them naturally conflict free, among other reasons.

Brooches

For many years most in the fashion industry had consigned the brooch to a grandmother’s wardrobe. While many of us have inherited some of these large pieces of jewelry, they have been safely hidden from view unused because of prevailing fashion trends. Fortunately they are making a comeback and have become a popular item in consignment shops and are now highly sought after. This has led to a host of recreations in new modern stores.

Pocket Watches

Similar to brooches these gems had been consigned to permanent display inside of the family safe. Renewed interest in the pieces has led to them selling at auction for millions of dollars, depending on their historical value and craftsmanship.

Historically pocket watches were common, and a symbol of status. It was hard to find a “reputable man” who did not own one of these fine pieces of jewelry and craftsmanship.

Antique Necklaces

For many years less was more. Necklaces and every other aspect of jewelry had moved to a minimalist contemporary look and style. While large necklaces that would not be out of place on the neck of an erstwhile countess were often lost, destroyed, or melted down to make new smaller pieces. Recently these larger neckpieces have returned to fashion, with antiques fetching a hefty price, and costume versions selling in shops across the country.

Coloured Gem Stones

While a diamond may still be a girl’s best friend, they are moving over in the marketplace. They are giving way to colored diamonds, and a variety of other precious and semi-precious stones with a range of colors. Recently Rihanna and other celebrities have been spotted wearing pieces with large colored stones – indicating their return to popularity. This can be owed to jewelry styles moving towards an antique look. Many of the pieces from days gone by are larger, and filled with a plethora of stones.

Large is In

The most noticeable trend in the jewelry real recently has been the move towards larger pieces. Classic antique jewelry was larger, for example brooches, and necklaces. This movement towards larger more ornate pieces is further evidence of a trend towards antiquity
