When shopping for pantyhose, you may have encountered the word denier imprinted on the packaging. Many shoppers do not truly understand what denier means. We asked the hosiery store, Fiore Direct to tell us more about pantyhose denier.
What Exactly Is Denier?
In very technical terms, pantyhose or tight denier relates to the thickness and weight of the yarn from which hosiery is made. The lower the denier of the yarn, the sheerer the pantyhose will appear and the more fragile the tights will be.
Many companies will use both a number and descriptions to help customers decide on a level of denier for their tights. Below there is a photo of the typical thickness that each pair of tights might offer in terms of coverage when regarding their denier.
Very sheer – 5 to 10 in denier.
Very sheer pantyhose are a great way of getting a smooth, bare leg look. Because of their tones, ultra sheer hosiery are used to help blend out blemishes and keeps your legs cool during the hot summer months.
Quite sheer – 10 to 20 in denier
Sheerer hosiery is slightly thicker than a 5 to 10 denier and is a must have essential for summer items. These pantyhose are usually available in a large array of colours and finishes such as matte or glossy. Because they are slightly thicker denier, many women prefer this thickness for everyday wear as they are more resistant to any snags or holes.
20 to 40 in denier
In the 20 to 40 dernier category, the look of the tights is semi-opaque. These pantyhose are typically stronger and longer lasting than the sheer pantyhose we aforementioned. The legs are mainly covered yet some skin will remain quite visible.
Opaque: 40 to 70 denier
If you are dressing for a cooler climate then opaque hosiery will give you a little more coverage than the rest. Fourty to seventy denier pantyhose are simply perfect for winter and cool springs too. You can team them with either skirts or shorts depending on your preference.
Very opaque: 70 to 100 denier
Wear your favourite dress in comfort in the cooler weather by matching it with very opaque tights. Thick, opaque pantyhose are absolutely ideal for keeping your legs protected when wearing any LBD.
Mega Thick Tights: 100 Denier Plus
This is normally the thickest denier that is available on the market and could be compared as leggings rather than standard pantyhose. This level of denier will give your legs complete coverage at all times with no skin showing at all. You can get mega thick tights in a variety of colors to create a fun and bold look with minimal effort.
At Fiore Direct, they have a wide range of pantyhose and tights which cover a range of deniers, making their tights perfect for any occasion.
