Big cities have their pluses and minuses. They’re packed with simple conveniences and opportunities, but at the same time, the hustle and bustle can get to be a bit much. Amidst the pluses and minuses though, these places are unquestionably great for dates. After all, you can’t go to a big city and say that there’s nothing to do! So just as we’ve covered some romantic nights out in New York City before, we’re going to cross the country in this piece and look at some of the most interesting dates you can set up in Los Angeles.
Hike the Hollyridge Trail
If you’d like to get a little bit of a workout, then head up with your partner to the Hollyridge Trail, which leads to the back of the iconic Hollywood sign. It’s usually better to go in the morning in order to beat the crowd. Not only do you get to see the famous sign up close, but you also get the bonus of seeing a spectacular view of the city –– and the sunrise if you get there early enough. You might even get a glimpse of P-22, the famous mountain lion that lives in Griffith Park. And while an early morning date isn’t the norm for a lot of people, think of it this way: If things go well, you can roll right into breakfast or coffee.
Hit a Poker Room Together
For couples who enjoy something a little more social for a date, an evening of card gaming makes for an unconventional but very fun option. And while most would rightly associate this idea with Vegas, Los Angeles has its own poker rooms as well. The Bicycle Casino is actually one of the most famous poker rooms in the world, and hosts players from around the world at its 185 card tables. The Hollywood Park Casino is another fun option –– a recently renovated space where you might just catch a celebrity (like long-time ESPN WSOP commentator Norman Chad, who’s a frequent guest). Whatever the venue, a few rounds of poker and a few cocktails make for an interesting date night. It also gives you plenty to talk about on the ride home, as you recap the action at the tables.
Throw Some Axes (But Not At Each Other)
There’s nothing quite like hurling a heavy ax at a wooden target on the wall in front of you –– but it’s even better when you do it with your significant other, or a new someone you’re interested in. Well, LA AX allows you do to just that. Don’t worry, you get a safety crash course before you throw your first ax, and the instructors are there supervising at all times. But for the most part, you just get something super fun and satisfying to do while you hang out with your date. It’s sort of like a trendy new alternative to bowling.
Stuff Your Face At Smorgasburg
Gone are the days of “I’ll just have the salad,”, especially on the first date. Instead have some fun and show your date exactly how many marshmallows you can fit in your mouth by going to the Smorgasburg Food Festival, which is open every Sunday in downtown LA from 10 am to 4 pm. You can enjoy everything from ice cream to tacos, Bangkok street food, and even vegan options. There are also vendors that sell non-food items such as crafts and clothing, so you can enjoy a fun look around while you digest your feast.
Leave a Letter at the Wisdom Tree
Finally, think about taking a hike to the Wisdom Tree, where you can get a beautiful view of Burbank, Griffith Park, and the Hollywood sign (from the front this time!). Don’t forget t bring a pen and paper, either. You can write a letter or a simple wish and leave it in an ammo box at the base of the tree. How romantic is that?
While there are plenty of things to do in LA, we hope that this list inspires you to go off the beaten path and have some more unusual dates. Pro tip: They’re usually the best and most memorable ones!
