Ensuring that the humidity in your home is at the right level isn’t just important for preventing your hair from going frizzy. It’s also important for ensuring that you and your family stay healthy and that your home remains a safe environment. Here are three ways in which having the correct humidity levels is beneficial to your health.
Keeps Bacteria And Fungi At Bay
We do a lot of activities in our homes that create humidity, including washing clothes, showering, and cooking. Unfortunately, a humid atmosphere is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. If you don’t keep the humidity levels in your home low enough, you could find that your home is playing host to some unwanted guests, which can damage both your home and your health.
A good way to check the humidity is to take note of the condensation on your windows. If there’s too much, this indicates that your home is pretty humid.
If you’d like to reduce the humidity in your home, you could try getting some indoor plants to help take some of the moisture out of the air. Some good varieties to try are:
- Boston fern: these ferns are used to 50% humidity so a humid environment is great for them; however, they aren’t that easy to care for if you’re new to house plants. They do look wonderful in a hanging basket though!
- Peace lily: these are great for taking toxins and moisture out of the air, and they’re relatively easy to care for too—they only need watering about once a week. Look out if you have pets though, as they are toxic to cats and dogs.
- Spider plant: not only do they take moisture out of the air, which is why you see so many in bathrooms, but these plants are also practically indestructible! They are also non-toxic, and they spawn lots of little spider plants so you can have them all over the house, or have your own inexpensive source of gifts.
Keeps Your Skin Healthy
So, high humidity isn’t great. Neither is low humidity. If there isn’t enough humidity in the air you could find that it adversely affects your skin, causing it to dry out.
If you struggle with dry skin, it can be beneficial to switch cleaners to a more gentle one, particularly over the winter months, and start a regular moisturizing routine. You may also find it helpful to exfoliate regularly and to use warm rather than hot water when washing, as hot water can damage your skin.
Helps You To Breathe Properly
Air with the correct level of humidity makes it much easier for us to breathe, as our airways are much more open when it’s humid. This is why using a humidifier is so effective when you have a chest cold.
A great way to regulate the level of humidity in your home is by using an air conditioner. Check out thefurnaceoutlet.com to see what kind of air conditioning units are available.
Not only does air conditioning help to regulate humidity, but it also purifies the air. By removing dust particles and pet hair, air conditioners help to reduce allergic reactions, which in turn will help you to breathe more easily.
