It is no secret I have a love affair with Monte Carlo.

I have been memorized by Monte Carlo and the mystique of the gorgeous place since I first went in 2006.

When I came across this book by historian Mark Braude,  MAKING MONTE CARLO, I didn’t hesitate to dive in to  the authoritative narrative history of Monte Carlo, the world’s first modern casino-resort and glamorous seaside playground of the rich and famous.

So many famous people have been tied to Monte Carlo, from F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway to Pablo Picasso and Coco Chanel, while Grace Kelly’s 1956 marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco is still talked about today.

The book focuses on the entrepreneurial talents of rages-to-riches founder François Blanc, the notorious munitions dealer Basil Zaharoff and the casino’s visionary Hollywood publicist Elsa Maxwell. These three were some of the founding characters that transformed the town into a hotspot of the in the 1920’s.

For anyone that loves history and the flair of Monaco, this is a must read.
