Along with Paris, London, and Milan, New York is considered one of the world’s major fashion capitals, and with annual sales of more than $9billion it isn’t difficult to see why. New York has long been renowned for its fantastic shopping, its bright lights and big attractions, and for being a finger that’s constantly on the fashion pulse. More than that, though, New York is a constant source of inspiration for the world’s top designers and fashion lovers alike and, at its heart, is the Garment District, a buzzing center of glitz, glamor, and killer high heels. If you’ve not yet been, what’s keeping you away?
Experience the fashionable highs of New York
While the likes of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the Rockefeller Center are admired for their ingenuity and beauty, any self-respecting fashion lover will be looking to venture much further into New York’s heart. Every shop window is a treasure trove to behold, while the sample sales for which the Garment District is best known will tempt even the most fair weather fashionista.
Away from New York’s well-dressed streets is a world to explore; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for example, hosts an annual Costume and Fashion Exhibit that is out of this world, while the Fashion Institute of Technology shows off the very best vintage and contemporary collections.
As any fashion fan will know it isn’t the mere look of an item than gauges its longevity, but the fabric from which it’s been cut, and the thought that has gone into every stitch and detail. Mood, located on 225 W 37th Street, is home to three floors of sheer fabric bliss; shop for a while or simply breathe in excellence before you cross into the Project Runway Experience.
Of course, New York’s fashion status doesn’t really start, or finish anywhere, but we’d like to recommend a trip to the Big Button, a monument beneath which the fashion district seems to sprawl, as well as the Fashion Walk of Fame; well, you’ve got to brush up on those designers somehow!
Soak up the culture, it’s New York Fashion Week
Held annually to celebrate the latest trends, the biggest designers, and the most eagerly anticipated collections New York Fashion Week, hosted by Mercedes Benz, is an event not to be missed, regardless of whether you’re an envied fashionista, or a mere dabbler in the world of clothing and accessories. Taking place between February 11th and 18th New York Fashion Week is a designer’s dream, featuring the latest creations from Ralph Lauren, Anna Sui, Project Runway, Calvin Klein, and Vera Wang, alongside many other skilled individuals; if you’re hoping to engage with the latest trends, find inspiration for your own look, or simply shop before the clothes even hit the high street you’re in the right place. There are simply no opportunities quite like this.
Once you’ve dragged yourself away from the catwalk, learned a thing or two about one of the world’s most admired professions, and seen all you can of the city’s illustrious, and highly fashionable past, it may be time to rest your ultra-chic head. So, where do you go?
New York is a vibrant metropolis filled with boutique hotels, extravagant apartments, and minimalistic bed and breakfasts, but it is The Manhattan Club, a luxurious complex owned by Bluegreen Resorts that really takes the crown; how could it not, when it is located in Midtown Manhattan, so close to the Garment District? With elegant décor, sumptuous furnishings, and every mod-con the Manhattan Club is so much more than accommodation; it is a home away from home with a private club lounge, a fitness center, and a concierge to cater to your every need; just what you’ll need after a hard day’s shopping, or an afternoon of taking notes. Isn’t it time you were as pampered as a runway model?
When it comes to high fashion you’d have to go a long way to beat New York; where else would high fashion meet vintage class with such aplomb? When you’ve seen every look that you possibly can, and worn yourself out with inspiration aplenty, remember to exhale.
