The living room is the place in your home where you relax in the evenings and entertain visitors and guests, so it’s one of the rooms you want to have to look its best. As it’s also a room where you spend a lot of time, it can start to look tired and dull after a while, and in need of a change. If you think you could do with a new look in your living room, you’ll find plenty of inspiration and ideas in design books, magazines, and websites; but remember, this is your space and should be designed to your taste.

  1. Structural changes

If you’re thinking about a drastic change, then you might need to make some structural alterations. If your room is on the small side,it might be worth considering knocking through and making more of an open plan space if that suits your lifestyle. Open plan is great for entertaining and does give you more floor space, but you will lose the wall space, which could be a problem if you have furniture or shelving that will need to be repositioned. One aspect of a room that can make a significant difference to its appearance is the windows. If yours are out of date or made of older materials that don’t have the stylish finish of modern windows, then you could look into replacing them, for example with Timber Windows that will look beautiful but have the efficiency of modern double glazing technology. Fitting new carpets is a sensible option, or you could take up the carpets and reveal the original floorboards. Or if the floors are composite or concrete, get them polished for a modern, industrial feel.

  1. Color schemes

You can choose any color you like foryour new design, rather than having to settle for one off the shelf. Say for instance you have a set of cushions that are a particular shade of turquoise that you like, color-matching technologycan take a sample of the color from the cushionand create a matching paint. That means you can have any color or combination of colors you wish in your new living room. Design rules tend towards having fairlyneutral wall shades with accents of brighter colors in the soft furnishings, but if you want to go wild and have everything a vivid purple, go ahead! It will certainlycreate a wow factor. If you’re going to replace the contents of your room, you can start from scratch and pick all new colors, but if you want a conventional style and are keeping all the furniture, go for a complementary color scheme. Alternatively, the eclectic lookis always fashionable, where you mix a range of different styles to create a harmonious whole.

Rearranging the furniture always gives a room a fresh look, as do new blinds or curtains, and light fixtures. The finishing touches are often the crowning glory, so if you haven’t bought a lot of new items for your room, do consider adding some sparkle with a few carefully placed objects that will set off your transformed living room to perfection.
