Avoidance is usually the path of least resistance in life. It’s often the route we take when we don’t want to be involved in any kind of conflict or debate. It can make things hurt less at the outset, but ultimately, avoidance is simply putting off the inevitable. There are many reasons why avoidance simply doesn’t work; here are some of them.

 

The Problem Will Get Worse

When you absolutely refuse to even look at a problem, that problem changes. Rather than shrinking or disappearing altogether, however, the opposite tends to happen; the problem will get a lot worse simply because you were avoiding it. Take your household bills as an example. You know you need to pay them, but you don’t have the money to do it. So you ignore them. You throw them in the trash. You avoid the problem. For now. However, after a while, you’ll get another bill, and this time there will be a penalty to pay on top of the balance. Ignore that, and you’ll find yourself in even worse trouble; possibly even in court. Or what about if you’ve hurt your foot? If you ignore the fact that you have an issue and simply avoid the pain by changing the way you walk, as that doesn’t make the pain go away. If work is making you worried and anxious because you’re avoiding whatever it is that is causing an issue; it’s inevitable that you will be worried and anxious at home too. It can lead to arguments or stress, even depression. It means that you are never able to really switch off, because that thing you’re avoiding is always there, whether you realize it or not. Avoiding one problem will potentially lead to it taking over your whole life.

 

Avoidance Often Involves Someone Else

One of the biggest reasons that avoidance never works is that it is a very rare thing for you to be the only person involved. In any given situation there will be at least two people, if not more. Even if you are prepared to ignore something going on that you don’t like, other people might not, and that will bring the problem to the fore no matter what. It’s far better to tackle the issue head-on, even if that is painful or uncomfortable. It will stop things spiraling out of control and will keep you in a position where you are able to deal with it.
