Does anyone really know who they are, what their purpose is in life, and what it would take to truly satisfy them with the life they are living? What about you? Are you happy with the direction your life is taking and what you have accomplished so far? If you are going to be honest with yourself, it would take a bit of introspection, and that is the very beginning of what it takes to go down the path of self-discovery.
Self Discovery
For women, it can be frustratingly difficult to begin questioning who they are because there is still a great deal of tension in a world which has been historically male-dominated. Gender roles are changing by the day and so we are led to believe that we can easily transition into traits which were historically typical of men. Herein lies one of the greatest problems today’s woman has in searching for her true inner self.
Is it necessary to step out of personality and character traits that we are comfortable with just to conform to societal trends? If you are going to be true to yourself in this quest for self-discovery, that may be one of the first questions you need to answer. Are you happy with the softer, feminine side of your being or would you like to pursue what society views as a stronger, more dominant character?
The key to self-discovery is honesty and if you can’t be honest with yourself, your quest for finding your inner self is probably doomed to failure.
The Importance of Knowing Who You Are
Many women embark on a path of self-discovery because they feel the weight of the baggage they are carrying around with them. The thing to remember is that we are all a product of our pasts – good, bad or indifferent. Our personal history defines who we are until we are able to step away from ourselves to understand how our past impacts our present. In other words, our past may have shaped us, but the past does not define who we are. If you are feeling weighed down with the cares of the world, perhaps you are not living in the world in which you were meant to live!
The demands of everyday life have you at odds with everyone you encounter and, unfortunately, altogether too many women seek solace in relationships or mood-altering substances. If you are living under what feels like a great weight, it’s important to step out from underneath that weight for a moment to see what it is that’s keeping you bogged down in depression, stress, and an inability to move ahead.
No One Said It Would Be Easy
Sometimes we are led to the brink of despair because we are not being fulfilled in our lives. Even with a loving husband and beautiful children, there is something missing that you can’t quite define. This is where so many women succumb to guilt. After all, they have what the world considers to be a great life so why do they feel like there is something more out there for them? Perhaps that’s because there is!
Here is where it is important to understand that delving deeper into your inner psyche isn’t always going to be pain-free. You will be looking at the past that shaped your present and some of those memories may be painful. It is at this point when many women simply turn off the movie because all those replays are too hard to bear. The thing to understand is that you can turn those memories around if you use them to strengthen your resolve to grow. Whether it was a bad relationship, an abusive parent or any number of experiences that kept you bound in your past for so long, know that those chains can be broken.
It’s Okay to Want Something More
Once you have begun to discover what has kept you down for so long, you begin to see clearly that there are things you’d like out of life but have felt guilty for wanting. Sometimes we impose guilt upon ourselves and that, too, is a chain that binds. Are you looking to improve your station in life? Perhaps you want to find a career for yourself but feel guilty for seeking something fulfilling outside the home.
Why not reach out and begin exploring possibilities? Perhaps you’d like to work in the medical field. You can learn more here about creating a resume before deciding anything definitive. You are on a journey toward self-discovery and this may mean breaking new ground. There is nothing to say that you can’t be a devoted wife and mother or a devoted lover in a relationship while still pursuing dreams of your own.
Being one with your significant other doesn’t mean you both need to follow the same path to fulfillment!
In the End – All Roads Lead to Rome
There are many approaches to self-discovery and no one path works well for all. To coin an old adage, all roads really do lead to Rome if you are willing to traverse the rough spots and climb the hills. Some women find that they need a mentor to guide them through the process while others are happy to embark on the journey alone. Some take a spiritual perspective with such things as yoga and meditation while others take a more scientific approach.
It doesn’t matter how you tap into your inner being but rather that you take that first step toward self-discovery. Whether you want to take a daily walk through the local park stopping to feed the squirrels and birds or join a yoga class at the local community center. One of the things you’ll learn is that nothing works as well for all people and you are, in fact, a unique creation within the universe. Even finding a path to self-discovery can be enlightening in itself, so don’t be afraid to explore the possibilities.
A truly fulfilled woman will know who she is, what she wants and how to bridge the barriers keeping her from being that person. Self-discovery is a journey you’ll never regret, no matter the effort to get you where you should be going. See for yourself.
