Burnout is prevalent problem in American, and we spoke with Burnout Expert Jennifer Marcenelle (MBA, BSN, RN, HBC-HN, Board-Certified Holistic Nurse, Certified Gemstone Therapy Practitioner Founder and CEO of Burn Bright Today), as she has dedicated her career to helping people move from Burning Out to Burning Bright.

Kimberly Fisher: What are the statistics regarding burnout and its negative impact?

Jennifer Marcenelle: As U.S. workers spend more than one-third of their lives working, a recent LinkedIn survey recently revealed that more than half of all professionals are continuously placing themselves at risk for worker burnout. Over one-third of all nurses in the U.S. report an emotional exhaustion score of 27 or higher, which is considered to be “high burnout.” Also, an eye-opening report was released this past April detailing shocking statistics about nurse burnout: according to the report, 15.6% of all nurses reported feelings of burnout, with the number rising to 41% of “unengaged” nurses.

KF: What are the signs of burnout?

JM: While mainstream media often attributes burnout to “a loss of engagement,” painting a picture of a healthcare provider leaning against the wall staring into space, burnout is actually more complicated. From low energy and fatigue to aches and pains and more, burnout symptoms also surface in the form of irritability, meltdowns, anxiety, depression, and in extreme cases, suicidal thoughts. As a result, nurses experiencing burnout often turn to drugs or alcohol to numb feelings, isolating themselves and restricting activities.

KF: What can you do to help with burnout?

JM: Find someone you can trust, whom you feel comfortable with, and who knows how to facilitate you on your healing journey. Learning to heal yourself is profoundly empowering. A Certified Gemstone and Diamond Practitioner can show you how you can take your life back and free yourself from the confines of the current healthcare system.

KF: What are the 5 things you should do before going on vacation to curb burnout?

1.) Manage the Rush – Two weeks prior to departure set the intention to begin slowing down.  Set your alarm a few minutes later every day, go to be a little earlier every night.  Walk more slowly. Speak more slowly.  Drive more slowly.  Even small increments make a difference and can help us train ourselves to slow down and take things in stride.

2.) Practice being fully present with those your friends and loved ones who will join you on vacation.  Either by phone or over a meal, take the time to slow down, have a meaningful connection, listen, hear and be fully present with them.

3.) Engage your senses – feel the location.  At the end of your day spend 10-15 minutes (or more if possible) looking over the photographs of your vacation spot.  Allow yourself to FEEL what it will be like lying in the sand, walking in the waves, hiking the trails, or shopping that rare market.  What do you hear? What do you see?  What do you smell?  What does it FEEL like to be fully present and relaxed?

4.) Bathe at night with sea salts, essential oils surrounded by scented candles that remind you of your vacation location.  Water tells time and helps the body connect with the deeper essence of Mother Earth.  Invite your entire essence to connect with relaxation and your dream location.

5.) Set aside 20 minutes at the end of your day for meditation or contemplation to release the stress of everyday life.  Connect with your highest self or divine essence and hold gratitude for yourself.  Hold gratitude for giving yourself and your loved ones the gift of a meaningful, restful and recharging vacation.  For added benefit continue this practice every day once you’ve arrived and after you’ve returned.

KF: You use crystals to help with burnout. Can you elaborate?

JM: Gemstone therapy can provide relief from a wide range of mental, physical and spiritual challenges. From helping with burnout, anxiety and depression to chronic and acute pain, sprains and even skin rashes and disorders, gemstone therapy energizes the body and mind, decreases blood pressure and inflammation, frees blocked emotions, reduces toxins, minimizes stress and attracts positive energy. Practitioners believe that gemstones carry certain vibrations which, when placed within an individual’s aura, has the effect of altering it. It is believed that the human aura contains nine colors: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, infrared and ultraviolet. Any deficiency or excess of these colors, according to the theory and practice, can upset the human body’s energy balance leading to illness. Gemstones heal by restoring the balance to the original composition of these nine colors.
