Do you know any adults who wear clear braces? There is a good chance that your answer is yes since the number of adults wearing orthodontics is increasing. Researchers believe that the reason that adults feel a lot more comfortable later in life with orthodontic care is due to the field’s innovative changes and the benefits that clear braces provide to adults. The American Association of Orthodontists reports that although the best time for completing orthodontics is when the patient is growing still, any age is a good age for orthodontic care!

History of Clear Braces

From 1970 through 1990, there were detailed studies of clear braces. In “The History of Braces and Orthodontics,” David Evans, DDS, details that it was 1997 when the first concept for effective invisible braces got introduced via the combination of 3-D computer technology and fabricated clear plastic aligners.

A series of retainer-like plastic aligners were issued to orthodontic patients that would be changed at certain intervals of time as the teeth continued to move into position. In 2000 clear braces first became available an orthodontic technique for trained dentists. For many adults, it changed their opinions about orthodontic care and led to a whole array of braces being introduced.

Clear Braces Benefits

As an increasing number of adult patients started pursuing care, the benefits provided by clear braces started to become evident. Adults could now improve the function and appearance of their smiles without the stigma of having a metal mouth. It was possible to remove the new aligners for dental hygiene care at home and for eating meals. Afterwards, you could place them back into your mouth in order to continue tooth movement. This process resulted in two things: properly aligned teeth improved oral health and the confidence of patients increase from having better looking teeth.

Teeth that are straighter are also healthier in terms of both function and form. Impacted food particles, plaque acids and bacteria all contribute to gum disease and dental decay. Less plague is collected by teeth that are properly aligned due to the fact that they are easier to keep clean through proper flossing and brushing techniques. There is a snugger fit between the teeth and gums when there are no overlapping teeth, which leads to decreased risk of inflammatory triggers that can result in periodontal disease. It has been proven that periodontal disease is a contributing factor to other types of systemic illnesses. Therefore, straighter teeth can contribute to improve health for the overall body in addition to contributing to having a healthy mouth.

Another benefit provided by clear braces is a reduction in traumatic wear that can be caused by teeth that don’t properly fit together. Teeth are similar to gears in a machine. If they aren’t properly aligned, they will wear improperly, which will result in the machine breaking down.

Teeth can wear at your gum line (abfraction), break or chip. When clear braces are used for aligning adult teeth, it can prevent patients having to invest a significant amount of money on restorations. When teeth are properly aligned it also reduces the amount of stress that is exerted on the jaw joint; misaligned and crowded teeth place an undue amount of stress on your jaw.

Clear Braces: Keep Your Teeth For Life

When it comes to dental care, the ultimate goal for providers is retaining every patient’s dentition for the rest of their lives. The benefits offered by clear braces extend well beyond just a pretty smile. In addition, clear braces offer the chance to straighten teeth and at the same time raise the confidence level of the patient for their daily lives. Although not every single patient is a suitable candidate for invisible braces, a large percentage of people are provided with improved oral product by the product. As the orthodontic techniques that are used with clear braces continue to be improved by companies, and as new companies continue to emerge, dentists and other dental professionals.
