Hair extensions are ideal for adopting a new style. There are right ways wrong ways to wear them, though. We are going to explore ten essential tips for wearing them. After we’re finished, you’re going to look fantastic!
1. Synthetic or Real?
You have a choice to make. Real human hair is, well, real. Synthetic is the cheaper alternative. If you’re trying to hide the fact you’re wearing extensions, real hair is for you.
Human hair is quite pricey, so unless you wear them often it’s probably not worth it. Think about the look you want to create. Are you trying to make them look natural, or are they supposed to be obvious for all to see?
2. Teasing Your Hair
Get used to teasing if you’re using clip-in extensions. To keep the clips in place, tease the hair at the root. Rough it up enough so the clips don’t slide out in the middle of a party.
You can find cheap teasing brushes online for less than ten dollars. Just look for one with lots of positive reviews.
Tease the hair just above where the extension clips in. Give it some additional volume by teasing horizontally. It will help to hide it and give a more natural look because the extension and your natural hair will blend in.
3. Upside Down
Here’s a clever trick to add some volume to a ponytail, place the clip upside down. Make sure it’s hidden under a layer of hair and that it faces in the correct direction.
To pull off this look, you’re going to need to use your deft teasing comb skills. Use the end of your home to section the hair into two layers. Place the clip on the top extension. Tease the areas near the root and pull the hair into whatever look you’re going for. We recommend some sort of updo for this technique.
4. Volume Without the Length
You can also use hair extensions to add volume without growing your hair out. This trick will help you cut your extensions to fit your hair.
Look in the mirror and split your hair down the scalp to the back. Bring everything forward. Turn to the right and make sure you’re standing upright. Comb everything as flat as you can.
Grab your favorite extension and clip it in half an inch away from the parting. Trim the extension to match the length of your hair. Do the same with another extension for the other side.
5. Repeat #4 With a Salon
If you aren’t confident messing around with your own extensions, go to your salon. Designer salons always have personalized extensions available.
Your stylist will essentially do exactly the same thing as we’ve described above. We recommend opting for a salon if this is your first time.
6. Sponge Rollers
Sponge rollers can fix any wavy or curly hair. Those with naturally wavy or curly hair often struggle with extensions. A packet of foam rollers will cost less than ten dollars online. Buy some.
Now dampen the strands of the extension. Even synthetic hair needs to be wet before altering the texture. Air dry them and grab your sponge rollers. Roll the hair around them and let the curlers stay overnight.
You’ll get a more natural look that blends in with your natural hair.
Prepare this step in advance if you’re inexperienced. Doing this a few nights before the event gives you more chances to get it right.
7. Synthetic Sheen
Synthetic hair is often criticized for its sheen. It gives it a more unnatural look. You can’t change this.
Instead, change your natural hair to match the silkiness of the extensions. Use some shine serum, which you can pick up online for less than five dollars.
Apply it to your hair before wearing the extensions. Your real hair will get the same silky look to it as your extensions.
In the event you’re using human hair, you don’t have to do this, but you still can. Rather than applying the serum to your hair only, apply it to the extensions as well.
8. Showering
If you are using permanent hair extensions, adequate care is essential. Where girls nearly always go wrong is in the shower. Washing extensions isn’t as easy as you think.
Let’s say you’ve gotten into the shower and you’re washing your hair. Practically always you’ll notice lots of strands of hair on your hands. This is natural breakage and you can’t stop it.
Unfortunately, the same thing happens to the extensions. Preserve your extensions by using a detangler before getting into the shower. This will stop much of the breakage commonly experienced.
9. The 14-Inch Rule
Short hair is less suited to extensions. If you’ve recently shaved your head for some odd reason, you might think some really long extensions will solve the problem. It won’t. Extensions are heavy.
If you have short hair, never wear extensions longer than 14 inches. Most women should err on the side of caution and limit them to about 11 inches.
Extensions that are too long will put too much strain on your natural hair. Where your natural hair connects with the extensions you’ll notice more and more breakage. Furthermore, they might even fall out completely.
10. Consider Your Budget and What You Get
You can get budget extensions that still have a high level of quality. There isn’t always a correlation between the price you pay and the quality you get.
There are lots of brands on the market that charge a high price. Yet you don’t feel as if you get what you pay for. On the contrary, you feel like you haven’t got value for money in the slightest.
Take a look at a number of brands and see what works for you. Look at what other customers have to say. If you can pay less for extensions, do so. You don’t have to purchase Remie extensions to get the best out of your luscious locks!
Good luck and happy hairdressing!
